The Complete Men’s Ring Sizing Guide (Made Simple)

Time to read 4 min

Ring sizing stresses a lot of people out, but it really doesn’t need to. Especially now. We’ve spent over a year building the most accurate way to size your rings from home, and we’re the first jewellery brand in Australia to bring this kind of technology into the space. So if you’re buying for yourself, gifting, or trying rings for the first time, this guide will walk you through every single thing you need to know.

From how to get your size instantly using our Virtual Ring Sizer, to why certain fingers are better to start wearing rings on, to what to do if you get the wrong size, this is your no-nonsense, step-by-step breakdown.

The Easiest Way to Find Your Ring Size: Billie Jo’s Virtual Ring Sizer

Getting your ring size right used to be annoying. Now it takes 1 minute.

Our Virtual Ring Sizer lets you size your fingers using a photo of your hand straight from your phone.

The tool analyses your pinky, ring, middle and index finger accurately. The only finger it won’t size is your thumb, because it can’t get a perfect read from a side profile, but for reference, your thumb is usually the same size as your index finger or one size bigger.

We’re proud of this one. We spent a full year building, testing and refining it until it was on point. We were never going to put a tool on the site unless we knew it was actually accurate. We spent a full year building it, testing it, refining it and making sure it was accurate enough for real customers. We weren’t going to put something on the site unless it was actually right.

There’s also a video on the sizing page that shows exactly how to use it so you can get it right first go.

Even with the Virtual Sizer, we still include a free reusable ring sizer in every order.

Why? Because sometimes a ring arrives and you realise you prefer a tighter or looser fit and/or the size happens to be wrong. The ring sizer lets you measure the correct size instantly in person so you can lodge a quick exchange through our online returns portal.

  • Works for future purchases too.

  • Perfect for checking your other fingers.

  • No more guessing ever again.

Understanding Ring Sizing: The Basics

Most people overthink ring sizing. Here’s what actually matters.

The Most Common Ring Sizes

Across more than 50,000 of our customers, these are the sizes that get ordered the most:

  • Men: Size 10

  • Women: Size 7

If you’re buying for someone and have zero idea what size they might be, these are solid starting points.

If You’re Between Sizes

Always size up. Slightly loose is always better than too tight.

Dominant Hand vs Non‑Dominant Hand

Your dominant hand will almost always be half a size bigger. You use it more, so the muscles in the fingers are slightly thicker.

Which Finger Should You Start With?

If you’re new to rings, not all fingers are equal.

Start With Your Strong Fingers

Your index and middle finger are the best places to start:

  • Most common fingers to wear rings.

  • They suit both slim bands and statements.

  • With most people, these two fingers are the same size, which means you can swap your rings around.

What About the Ring Finger?

If you’re not into anything that feels “wedding‑coded”, skip it for now on the left hand but for the right hand you’re good to go.

How Tight Should a Ring Fit?

A good fit is simple:

  • It should slide on fairly easily.

  • It should come off with a little resistance at the knuckle.

  • When closing your fist, it doesn’t cut off the circulation to your finger.

  • It shouldn’t feel like it’s falling off when you shake your hands.

If you need to force it on and your finger is going red, it’s too small. If it falls off washing your hands, it’s too big.

Sneaky Hack: How to Make a Ring Slightly Tighter

If your ring is just a little too big, here’s a simple unorthodox trick:

You can paint clear nail polish on the inside of the band. Let it dry, try it on, and repeat until you get the fit you want.

  • Don’t go beyond 5 layers.

  • It’s not permanent.

  • But it works.

This is a personal‑use hack. Your ring, your rules.

What If You Get the Size Wrong?

No stress. We built our exchange process to be quick and easy.

Standard Exchanges

  • 30‑day exchanges year‑round.

  • 45 day extended exchanges during the Christmas season.

  • Lodge it online through our returns portal.

Instant Exchanges

If you choose Instant Exchange:

  • Your replacement ships within 24 hours (Mon-Fri).

  • You get 7 days to send the original back.

What Cannot Be Returned

  • Engraved pieces (custom work, permanent modification).

  • Damaged items (scratches, dents, wear marks). We can’t resell worn jewellery. Think of it this way - you wouldn’t want to receive a ring that looks like it had a big weekend out.

Ring Width Changes the Fit (Most People Don’t Know This)

Thicker bands fit tighter. Always keep this in mind.

  • wide ring may need a size up.

  • slim band fits true to size.

-For example: Our Canvas Ring is a wide ring and our Serenity Ring is a slim band.

Quick Tips to Get the Most Accurate Size

  • Size your fingers at room temperature.

  • Avoid sizing right after a workout.

  • Measure late morning or early afternoon.

  • If gifting, start with common sizes (10 men, 7 women).

  • If you want 100% precision with size, get measured at your local jeweler, it’s free.
